Continuing to Build our Leadership Team
In April, we announced five inspiring new leaders have joined our executive team—and May is shaping up to be another exciting month for the AltSchool community.
You might have heard rumors about AltSchool’s Series C round in the last few days. I’m happy to confirm that we are in the middle of fundraising—having already closed $40 million of a larger round—and will be sharing more details over the summer.
I’m also happy to introduce you all to Amir Mirza, who joins next week as our CFO. Amir has been with Bank of America Merrill Lynch for nearly two decades, most recently as Managing Director. During his career in finance, he’s worked closely with senior management and boards of directors across technology, media, and telecom companies to lead strategic transactions. Amir will help to drive decisions on where to invest and focus our resources over the next few years to achieve success. We should all feel exceptionally fortunate to have someone with his experience and skillset joining our team.
In addition, AltSchool’s co-founder and CTO, Bharat Mediratta, will expand his role to become AltSchool’s President. For a decade, Bharat was Google’s Distinguished Engineer in charge of building out the Google.com homepage and search results experience. Bharat built out an organization that today supports over one thousand engineers contributing to a product with over one billion users. As we enter this next chapter, I know that we will all benefit from Bharat’s experience leading large organizations and his innate understanding of how to scale new technologies.
As Bharat assumes his new responsibilities, Coddy Johnson will transition out of his role as COO to become the Chairman of our Board of Directors for the next two years. Coddy’s family will be returning to Southern California where Coddy will rejoin his former company, Activision, as its President and COO. Although we will miss seeing him each day, the entire AltSchool team is proud for Coddy and excited to have him stay closely involved in supporting AltSchool's strategy and trajectory.
This summer will be an especially busy and momentous time for AltSchool in other ways. We are getting ready to open our third New York City school in Union Square. Our educators will be out of the classroom for the summer and will be working side-by-side with our engineering team on platform development. And in a major step forward for AltSchool, we will be preparing to welcome our very first cohort of partner schools to our school network this fall.
We continue to be inspired by the incredible work educators are doing across the country to make education more personalized and learner-centric. I am so honored to work alongside the team who has chosen to work at AltSchool, as well as the partner schools who have joined us on our mission to enable children to reach their potential. I cannot wait to see what comes from the collaboration between educators, students, and parents within our lab and partner school network this next school year. Together, we will continue to accelerate our thinking about learning.
