Privacy Policy

AltSchool respects your concerns about privacy and values its relationship with you.

AltSchool owns and operates schools (“Lab Schools”), and creates, hosts, and maintains educational tools and technology that are licensed to third-party partner schools (“Partner Schools”). This Privacy Policy applies to information collected by AltSchool; any affiliated or subsidiary companies (“AltSchool,” “we” or “us”); Lab Schools; any AltSchool summer programs and afterschool activities (“AltSchool Programs”); information shared with AltSchool by Partner Schools and their administrators, educators, students, and parents; offline or online, including, but not limited to audio and video information collected in Lab School classrooms, web-based teaching and learning tools, and all websites or apps that post a link to this Privacy Policy (collectively, the “Sites”).

This Privacy Policy explains the types of information we collect, how we may use that information, and with whom we may share it. Our Privacy Policy also describes the measures we take to protect the security of the information. We also tell you how you can contact us to get answers to questions you may have about our privacy practices. Please read this Privacy Policy carefully. By continuing to interact with our Sites, you are agreeing to the practices described in this Privacy Policy.


CHANGES TO THIS PRIVACY POLICY


We ask that you read this Privacy Policy from time to time. AltSchool may modify this Privacy Policy at any time in its sole discretion. If we make material changes to this Privacy Policy that increase our rights to use personal information we have previously collected about you, we will obtain your consent through an email to your registered email address, or if you are a student or parent of a student enrolled in a Partner School, through an email to the Partner School’s administration.

INFORMATION WE COLLECT & HOW WE USE IT

If you are a student or a parent of a student enrolled in a Lab School, your relationship is directly with AltSchool.

If you are a student or parent of a student enrolled in a Partner School, your relationship is with that Partner School, but information collected by or shared with that Partner School or provided through AltSchool’s products and services may be shared with AltSchool in order for AltSchool to provide its educational tools and technology.

If you are a Partner School or an administrator at a Partner school, your relationship is directly with AltSchool.

You may provide personal information including your name, address, telephone number, email address, password, payment card information, birth date, gender, demographic information, and any other information that you choose to provide when you contact us through the Sites, visit the Sites, create an account with us, or apply for admission to an AltSchool Lab School. Some of our Sites may also offer you the option to interact with, capture, or save information through the Sites, such as photos.

We may also automatically collect information about the devices you use to interact with our Sites, and how you use the Sites, such as what you have searched for and viewed on the Sites. The information automatically collected may be associated with any personal information you have provided.

Our Lab Schools may also collect audio and video recordings of teachers, students, and parents for the purposes described below.

Our Sites do not collect personal information about your online activities over time and across third party websites or online services. Therefore, “do not track” signals transmitted from web browsers do not apply to our sites, and we do not alter any of our data collection and use practices upon receipt of such a signal.

AltSchool may use information it has collected about you for a number of purposes, including:
  • To build a model of student progress and learning in order to provide actionable insight;
  • To serve the functions of the Sites;
  • To personalize the Sites for your use;
  • To personalize the teaching and learning tools for individual students;
  • To manage everyday business needs, such as administration and improvement of the Sites;
  • To analyze the Sites’ performance and functioning;
  • To prevent fraud; to enforce the Sites’ Terms of Use; to comply with all applicable laws and corporate reporting obligations; and to enforce AltSchool’s agreements;
  • To analyze how you use the Sites and to perform other user research;
  • To communicate with you about our products and services;
  • To facilitate your interaction through our Sites with other consumers, including through social networking; and
  • Solely as to information collected from visitors to www.altschool.com, but not users of the teaching and learning tools, to send you further notices, promotions, solicitations, brochures, or other marketing materials regarding our Sites, our products, and the services of our businesses, affiliates, and business partners.
Additional ways in which personal information may be collected and/or used are as follows:

Information You Provide 

You may provide certain information directly to AltSchool depending on your relationship with AltSchool and the purpose of your visit to the Sites.

Visitors to the Sites (including Lab School applicants, job candidates, potential Partner Schools and others)

Information Request. If you request information about our schools, products, or services, we may ask you to provide personal information and details, such as your name, email address, and application information. We will use your details to send you the information you request and may use this information to communicate with you in the future about our schools, products, or services.

Newsletters and Other Communications. We may offer online or offline newsletters and other communications about our schools, products, services, and promotions. To sign up, we ask you for personal information, such as your name, postal address, and email address. We may use the information to send you the communications you request and to communicate with you about our products and services.

Careers. You may search for open AltSchool positions on the Sites and apply for positions by submitting your resume and other personal information, such as your name, contact information, and job history. We use the information you submit to evaluate your interest in employment and to contact you regarding possible employment.

Students or Parents of Students Applying to or Enrolled in a Lab School or AltSchool Programs

Application, Registration, and Enrollment Information: If you choose to apply to, register in, or enroll in a Lab School or AltSchool Programs, you may provide AltSchool with a variety of demographic and personal information, including but not limited to, full name, physical address, email address, username, password, phone number, birthday, gender, guardian information, prior educational records, and information regarding learning needs and medical conditions. We will use this information to provide our educational services. 

Information Collected to Facilitate School Activities: Students in Lab Schools may create or provide a variety of information during their time as students. Such information may include, but is not limited to, media content generated by students and teachers (pictures and audio/video recordings), academic projects, written work, and assessments during school activities and through the use of our teaching and learning tools. Our Lab Schools may also collect audio and video recordings of students. We use recordings of students in our Lab Schools to research and improve our teaching methods, technology, models and effectiveness, and to analyze and research student progress and behavior.

Financial Information: If you choose to register or enroll in a Lab School or AltSchool Programs, you may provide AltSchool, or third parties selected by AltSchool, to administer these services with a variety of financial information in order to apply for financial aid, pay tuition, and/or pay other fees. Such information may include name, address, and payment information, including payment card details. We and/or third parties selected by AltSchool to administer these services will use this information to make financial aid award determinations and/or process your payments.

Students or Parents of Students Enrolled in a Partner School

Personal Information: If you are enrolled in a Partner School, you and/or the Partner School in which you are enrolled may provide AltSchool with a variety of student, parent, and teacher demographic and personal information, including but not limited to, full name, physical address, email address, username, password, phone number, birth date, gender, prior educational records, information regarding learning needs and medical conditions, and guardian information (“Partner Information”). We will use this information to provide our platform and services.

Information Collected to Facilitate Teaching and Learning Activities: Students enrolled at Partner Schools may create or provide a variety of information during their time as students through the AltSchool licensed teaching and learning tools. Such information may include media content generated by students and teachers (pictures and audio/video recordings), academic projects, written work, and assessments during school activities and through the use of our teaching and learning tools. (“Partner Student-Generated Content”)

Partner School Administrators and Teachers

Registration and Enrollment Information: Partner School, Partner School administrators, and Partner School teachers may provide AltSchool with a variety of information regarding your school, its student body, and its employees, including Partner Information and Partner Student-Generated Content. We will use this information to provide our platform and services.
 
Information Collected to Facilitate School Activities: Administrators and Teachers in Partner Schools may create or provide a variety of information while using our teaching and learning tools. Such information may include media content generated by teachers (pictures and audio/video recordings), academic projects, written work, assessments, and notes concerning student and families during school activities and through the use of our teaching and learning tools.  

Financial Information: Partner Schools may provide AltSchool with a variety of financial information in order to pay for AltSchool’s services. Such information may include name, address, and payment information of the Partner School. We will use this information to process your payment.

Information We Automatically Collect

We may automatically collect information about the devices you use to interact with our Sites. The information we automatically collect may include device identifier, web browser, search terms and results, page or app views, date and time pages are viewed, language, telephone number, and browsing information collected through cookies and beacons on our Sites, and IP address. We may also automatically collect information about how you use the Sites, such as what you have searched for and viewed on the Sites. The information automatically collected may be associated with any personal information you have provided.

Our Lab Schools may also collect audio and video recordings of teachers, students, and parents for the purposes described above and below.

AltSchool’s Use of Cookies

When you visit our Sites, AltSchool may place pieces of code, commonly referred to as “cookies,” or similar technology on your devices. We may collect information about you or from activity on devices associated with you as soon as you visit our sites and services. By using our sites and services, you permit us to collect and use your information from activity on devices associated with you in accordance with this Privacy Policy.

AltSchool uses cookies to collect information about how you use its Sites. Many Internet browsers and mobile devices allow you to block the transmission of information, such as your IP address or location information, or to block the installation of cookies. You may choose to enable these options. However, enabling these options may prevent you from using many or all of the core features and functions available on our Sites.

INFORMATION WE SHARE

We may may share your information with third party service providers who perform services and functions on our behalf to support our interactions with you, including, for example, providing our products and services, processing your purchases, administering surveys, or communicating with you.  AltSchool may also share the information of visitors to www.altschool.com, but not users of the teaching and learning tools, with third parties for the purpose of delivering you advertising.

We may disclose information about you:

  • To provide our products and services;
  • When we believe disclosure is necessary or appropriate to prevent physical harm or financial loss or in connection with an investigation of suspected or actual illegal activity;
  • If this is necessary to protect the vital interests of a person;
  • To enforce our Terms of Use;
  • To protect our property, services and legal rights;
  • To prevent fraud against AltSchool, our affiliates, or business partners;
  • To support auditing, compliance, and corporate governance functions; or
  • To comply with any and all applicable laws.

It is our policy to protect you from having your privacy violated through abuse of the legal systems, whether by individuals, entities or government, and to contest claims that we believe to be invalid under applicable law. However, it is also our policy to cooperate with valid legal orders to provide information. Accordingly, we may disclose your information if we reasonably believe it is necessary:

  • To satisfy or comply with any applicable law, regulation or legal process or to respond to lawful requests, including subpoenas, warrants or court orders;
  • To protect our property or rights;
  • To protect the safety of any person;
  • To address security or technical issues; or
  • To prevent or stop activity we consider to be illegal or unethical.
BUSINESS TRANSFERS AND CORPORATE CHANGES

We reserve the right to disclose and transfer all information related to the Sites, including personal information:

To a subsequent owner, co-owner or operator of one or more of our Lab Schools or our products or services.

In connection with a corporate merger, consolidation, or restructuring, the sale of substantially all of our stock and/or assets, or other corporate change, including, without limitation, during the course of any due diligence process.

CHILDREN’S PRIVACY POLICY

While some of AltSchool’s Sites are general audience websites that do not knowingly collect information from children under 13 ("Children" and each, a "Child"), portions of AltSchool’s Sites and certain teaching and learning products and services are directed to children under 13. Specifically, AltSchool’s web-based teaching and learning tools are directed at Children, and we may collect information directly from children under 13 enrolled in Lab Schools and Partner Schools in connection with them. Therefore, we provide this Children's Privacy Policy to explain our privacy practices with respect to children under 13 who access and use our Sites and services.

Children enrolled at Partner Schools may use AltSchool Sites provided that the Child’s school has complied with its obligations under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act ("FERPA") and the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act ("COPPA"). If an appropriate school or school district official has consented to our collection of information from Children who are students in a manner consistent with COPPA, we will collect and use such personal information, but only for the use and benefit of the school and for no other commercial purpose. School officials may revoke at any time their consent to allow Children to use AltSchool’s products. The parents of Children enrolled in AltSchool Lab Schools and AltSchool Programs have directly consented to the collection and usage of the same information.

Upon a parent’s or a legal guardian’s request, we will provide a description of the personal information we collect, give parents the opportunity to review their Child's personal information or have such information deleted, and provide the opportunity to prevent further collection or use of their Child's personal information. Through this Privacy Policy, we provide each school with all the notices required under COPPA. Parents also can request a copy of these notices and request access to their Child's personal information to review and/or have the information deleted by contacting privacy@altschool.com.

Collection & Use of Information from Children Under 13

Collection Practices

The information we may collect on children under 13, either directly from children using the teaching and learning products and services, from parents of applicants to our Lab Schools, from parents of students enrolled in our Lab Schools and Partner Schools, or from the Partner Schools, includes: 

  • Full name;
  • Physical address;
  • Email address;
  • Username and password;
  • Phone number;
  • Birth date;
  • Gender;
  • Guardian information;
  • Prior educational records;
  • Behavioral and medical history (Lab Schools only);
  • Application essay responses (Lab Schools only);
  • Media content generated by students and teachers (pictures and audio/video recordings) during school activities; and
  • Academic projects, written work, notes, and assessments by students, teachers, administrators, and parents.

Our Lab Schools may also collect audio and video recordings of students for the specific purposes described below.

In addition, we may automatically collect information about one or more devices Children under 13 use to interact with our Sites and services such as a computer, mobile phone, or tablet. The information we automatically collect may include device identifier, web browser, browsing information collected through cookies and beacons, such as IP address,  and activity on the Sites, including the date and time of use. Any usage information, device identifier, or other persistent identifier we collect is used for the sole purpose of providing support for the Sites’ internal operations.

Use of Collected Information

Our tools do not enable children under 13 to make their personal information publicly available. We use the information collected on children under 13 to:

  • Share students’ progress and school work with teachers and parents;
  • Provide reports to teachers or school or school district administrators at the class, school, or district level;
  • Support teachers or school or school district administrators implementing our products or using our services;
  • Monitor the use of our products and perform such analyses as might be necessary or helpful in improving product performance, efficiency, and security; and
  • Research how students use the sites and Services and perform analysis directed at improving the educational effectiveness of our products and services.

We use recordings of students in our Lab Schools to research and improve our teaching methods, technology, models and effectiveness, and to analyze and research student progress and behavior.

We will not use any information collected about children under 13 to directly advertise or market to students or their parents.

Disclosure of Information from Children Under 13

AltSchool may rely on third-party service providers who provide support for the internal operations of the Sites and services, such as hosting the Sites, designing and/or operating our services, tracking analytics, or performing other administrative services. These third party service providers are held to the same obligations as AltSchool with regard to information from children under 13, do not disclose or use information for any other purpose, and are subject to the terms of this agreement.

We do not provide links to external resources or chat rooms except for external resources designed for classroom use, such as links to curriculum or teaching tools. Nor do our services contain any offensive or inappropriate content. As a result, AltSchool’s products are fully compliant with the Children's Internet Protection Act.

YOUR CALIFORNIA PRIVACY RIGHTS

Pursuant to California Civil Code Section 1798.83(c)(2), AltSchool does not share your personal information with third parties for those third parties’ direct marketing use.

LINKS TO OTHER WEBSITES

Our Sites may provide links to other websites for your convenience and information. For example, our branded merchandise may be offered for sale by an authorized third party merchandise partner through a website they own and control, which may be linked to the Sites. These websites may operate independently from our Sites. If you transact with an authorized third-party merchandise partner, your purchase will be conducted on our authorized third party merchandise partner’s website subject to the third party’s privacy policies and terms of use. Other linked websites may have their own privacy notices or policies, which we strongly suggest you review if you visit any linked websites. To the extent any linked websites you visit are not part of our Sites, we are not responsible for their content, any use of the websites, or the privacy practices of any of those websites. You should review the privacy policy and terms of use that apply to that third party’s website.

OUR USE OF GOOGLE ANALYTICS FOR ADVERTISING

AltSchool has implemented Google Analytics to collect analytics about how you use our the general audience Sites (but not on the teaching and learning tools). AltSchool uses the Google Analytics cookie and Google advertising cookies together for retargeting campaigns, to track site behavior, demographic information, and browser and device information, and to personalize content. You can opt-out of Google Analytics using Google’s Ads Settings, or by using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

HOW WE PROTECT PERSONAL INFORMATION

We maintain administrative, technical and physical safeguards to protect against loss, misuse or unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration or destruction of the information you provide when visiting or using the Sites.
